I found this site a few days ago, while I was looking around on some software-development websites. II'll try to find the link again, I'm not sure where it is because of the sheer volume of websites I visit in a day.

I'm not sure where to start on the forums, but I'm currently studying computer science as an undergrad, I'm in the middle of my second year, and I expect to graduate in 2011. I've starting to find that I have a much greater interest in the lower-level aspects of programming, such as assembly, C++, operating systems, and firmware, then my peers do.

      Welcome :D

I searched through the backlinks to see if I could find the website you mentioned. Was it this one?

It was that link, wasn't sure last night if it was that site, or if I had clicked upon it from another site.

Anyway, Coding Horror happens to be my current obsession, even if I can't really relate to the .NET stuff so much, I'm a Linux guy, desktop and ThinkPad both run openSUSE 11.1.

I heard about this site via Aspies for Freedom's "work issues" subforum (which, incidentally, was created at my request). There the poster had remarked that AT hadn't attracted much recent postings, so here I am doing my bit to redress the balance.

I'm 35 and used to work in a branch of the scientific civil service but got fired last year. Have been trying to sue them for unfair dismissal while looking for new work. In the meantime I've been studying Open University courses M255 Object-Oriented Programming with Java and TXR120 Engineering: An Active Introduction. Previous programming experience has been in Matlab, Maple, LaTeX, Fortran, Unix/Linux, PV-Wave, SQL, JavaScript, Perl and IDL.

Very interesting. I have experience of using some of these programming languages. I still sometimes use LaTeX for typesetting.

I'm mother to a son with Aspie traits, and have ripped my hair out for years trying to understand his behaviour....until the condition was diagnosed just a few years back. It has caused family stress and sleepless nights on many occasions. He's just completed a physics degree; not a high pass unfortunately because it all became just a bit too much in the latter stages....now he's going through an adjustment period and thinking about settling down to build his skills at computer programming, which he already does very well. I have a science work and study background myself, although not to degree level, so I can understand the general issues. I'm not looking for work on his behalf.....he has to do that himself, of course, but I'm interested in any links or discussions that would help.

                Welcome to the forum.

AS has been known about in the UK for nearly 15 years but some people seem to have slipped through the net of diagnosis until quite late in life.

Your son is more than welcome to join this forum himself. What sort of computer programming is he involved in?

Is he desperate for work yet or is he still looking around and preparing himself for when something appealing turns up?

Even longer than that for some jammy sods. Jessica Peers got diagnosed in 1990 and Marc Fleisher over ten years earlier!
